Oakland Athletics announcer Glen Kuiper has been suspended indefinitely following the use of a racial slur live on-air.

On May 5, during a pre-game show ahead of the Oakland A’s match against the Kansas City Royals, the 59-year-old MLB announcer shared how he and his colleague Dallas Braden had a “phenomenal day” due to their visit to the Negro Baseball League Museum since they were in Missouri. You’re probably thinking, “Wait, how could he possibly ruin this moment?” Well, things quickly took a turn for the worse when he badgered the museum’s name by saying the n-word instead of “negro” when naming the historic site.

Kuiper immediately issued an apology without providing any context, leaving listeners more than a little confused. “A little earlier in the show, I said something, didn’t come out quite the way I wanted it to,” he said. “I just wanted to apologize if it sounded different than I meant it to be said. … I just wanted to apologize for that.”

“I could not be more sorry and horrified by what I said,” he added. “I hope you will accept my sincerest apologies.”

The Oakland Athletics followed up with a statement of their own via the team’s official Twitter account: “The language used by Glen Kuiper during today’s pregame broadcast is unacceptable. The Oakland Athletics do not condone such language. We are working to address the situation.”

Bob Kendrick, president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, also weighed in on the incident, putting out a statement through his Twitter account. “I’m aware of the unfortunate slur made by Glen Kuiper. I welcomed Glen to the NLBM yesterday and know he was genuinely excited to be here,” he tweeted. “The word is painful and has no place in our society. And while I don’t pretend to know Glen’s heart I do know that my heart is one of forgiveness. I hope all of all you find it in yourselves to do the same!”

Kuiper has covered baseball within the Bay Area for over three decades for NBC Sports California. NBC is conducting an internal investigation, but the company has decided to keep Kuiper off the air until it is complete.
