Missouri parents whose son was victim of sextortion issue warning after teen’s suicide

AURORA, Mo. — Authorities say Evan Boettler shot and killed himself in January and at the time, no one knew why. Boettler’s parents say the 16-year-old had no chronic, mental health issues and his suicide was a mystery.

Today the Aurora-Marionville Police Department and the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office said their investigation has revealed the Aurora teen was a victim of sextortion.

Boettler’s parents requested authorities tell the public what happened to their son, because they want other parents and teens to be aware this is happening right here in the Four States.

Emergency services responded to the Boettler’s home in January after the teen shot himself, and despite attempts to save him, he died at the scene.

Investigators reviewed the teen’s electronic devices and they say an hour before his death an online predator tried to force Evan to pay them money or certain photos of him would be sent to his family, friends, and community.

Authorities believe this is what led Boettler to take his own life.

Law enforcement, along with Boettler’s parents, want to warn the public about these scams and the devastating effect it can have on the victim, and those around them. They add, talk to your children about internet safety. Officials say they want to prevent these tragedies and urge parents to teach their children about “stranger danger” online.

Authorities urge anyone in crisis to call 911 and explain the situation so they may help. And to call 988 if you feel suicide is the only way out.
