Missouri Democrats prepare for primary: What you need to know

MISSOURI — Earlier this month, Missouri Republicans got to pick their choice for a presidential candidate – this weekend it’s the Democrats’ turn.

When Missouri Republicans picked their presidential nominee, it was by caucus, but Democrats will be using a primary process.

“So how it works – there’s one polling place per county. And you go into that polling place, which since it’s not state-run, you can go to whichever county you’re in,” said Austin Reed, SWMO Democrats Exec. Dir.

This means a Jasper County voter can vote in Barton, Cedar, or Newton County.

You must be a registered Missouri voter to take part and must show some kind of ID.

“In 2022, as well they implemented a whenever you go to register to vote, you can opt-in for an optional party affiliation. So as long as you’re not a registered Republican, you can also vote,” said Reed.

The ballot has six registered Democrat candidates: Joe Biden, Dean Phillips, Stephen Lyons, Armando Perez-Serrato, Marianne Williamson, and Jason Palmer.

The Democrat primary polls will open this Saturday, March 23rd from 8:00 a.m. to noon.
