Will Mississippi Coast schools be open Wednesday? The latest from our districts, schools

Mississippi Coast colleges and universities canceled in-person classes for Wednesday, with many secondary schools canceling classes as well, with the expected arrival of severe weather.

Here is a list of local districts and schools and their plans for Wednesday classes.

Bay St. Louis-Waveland School District: Wednesday classes canceled. The district announced via social media “Due to the anticipated severe weather and unsafe road conditions we have decided to cancel school on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, in order to prioritize the safety of our community.”

Biloxi Public School District: As of 9 p.m. Tuesday, has not announced any changes to Wednesday’s schedule.

Diocese of Biloxi: As of 9 p.m. Tuesday, has not announced any changes to Wednesday’s schedule.

Grace Baptist Academy: As of 9 p.m. Tuesday, has not announced any changes to Wednesday’s schedule.

Gulfport School District: No changes to Wednesday’s schedule. At 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, the district posted to social media “All Gulfport School District schools will be open on Wednesday, April 10, 2024.”

Hancock County School District: Wednesday classes canceled. The district announced Tuesday night, via social media “Due to a forecast of severe weather, damaging winds and flooding, Hancock County School District will be closed on Wednesday, April 10, 2024. Staff and students will return to school on Thursday, April 11, 2024. Please stay safe.”

Harrison County School District: Classes canceled Wednesday. The district posted at 8 p.m. Tuesday on social media “Due to the severe weather conditions forecasted for our area, all schools in the Harrison County School District will be closed on Wednesday, April 10. This decision was made following consultation with Harrison County Emergency Management officials. As always, the safety of our students, faculty, and staff remains our top priority. HCSD schools are scheduled to reopen on Thursday, April 11. Please stay safe and stay tuned to our official communication channels (District and school websites, District and school social media, and ParentSquare) and local news outlets for any further updates.”

Holy Trinity Catholic School: Classes canceled Wednesday. The school posted at about 8 p.m. Tuesday on social media “Under advisement from the Hancock County EOC and the National Weather Service, Holy Trinity Catholic School will be closed tomorrow. Please continue to check your email and text messages for the most up to date information.”

Jackson County School District: No changes to Wednesday’s schedule. At 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, posted to social media “Normal school day on Wednesday, April 10. We will continue to monitor the weather and make a call out if a schedule change is needed.”

Long Beach School District: No changes to Wednesday’s schedule. At about 3 p.m. Tuesday, posted to social media “At this point, we plan to have normal dismissal.”

Moss Point School District: No changes to Wednesday’s schedule. At around 6 a.m. Wednesday, posted to social media “As we continue to monitor the forecasted inclement weather in our area, we want to inform you that schools in Moss Point, MS, will remain open today. The safety of our students and staff is our top priority, and we are closely watching the weather conditions. Please rest assured that we are prepared to take immediate action if the situation changes. Updates will be provided through our official channels as necessary.”

Nativity BVM School: Classes canceled Wednesday. At 9 p.m. Tuesday, the school posted to social media “Due to expected severe weather, Nativity BVM Catholic School will be closed on Wednesday, April 10th. Stay safe everyone!”

Ocean Springs School District: No changes to Wednesday’s schedule. At 6 a.m. Wednesday, posted to social media “OSSD remains on normal bell schedule Wednesday, April 10.”

Our Lady Academy: Wednesday classes canceled. The academy announced Tuesday night via social media “OLA, HTCS, SSC and all other schools in Hancock County will be closed tomorrow due to advisement from the Hancock County EOC and the National Weather Service. Please continue to check your email and text messages for updates.”

Pascagoula-Gautier School District: Classes will be held as normal. “The PGSD will continue to closely monitor the incoming inclement weather expected Wednesday. At this time, the PGSD plans to have school on Wednesday as the forecast is for the heaviest rain to track north of the coast. If further updates are necessary, messages will be posted to the PGSD Facebook page, and sent via text message and to our local television outlets.”

Pass Christian School District: Classes canceled Wednesday. About 8:45 p.m. Tuesday, the district posted to social media “Out of an abundance of caution, the Pass Christian School District will be closed tomorrow, April 10, 2024, due to the many uncertainties we have with the weather. School will resume on Thursday, April 11, 2024, following our normal bell schedule. Stay safe!”

St. Alphonsus Catholic School: Classes canceled Wednesday. At 9:10 p.m., the school posted to social media “Due to the severe weather coming through our area, St. Alphonsus will be closed tomorrow, Wednesday, April 10. As always, the safety of our students and staff is our top priority. Thank you for your understanding, and we pray you all stay safe and dry tomorrow.”

Saint Stanislaus High School: Our Lady Academy posted the following announcement, via social media Tuesday night “OLA, HTCS, SSC and all other schools in Hancock County will be closed tomorrow due to advisement from the Hancock County EOC and the National Weather Service. Please continue to check your email and text messages for updates.”.

St. Patrick Catholic High School: Classes canceled Wednesday. The school posted to social media: “Due to the severe weather conditions forecast for our area, St. Patrick will be closed on Wednesday, April 10. School is scheduled to resume on Thursday, April 11.”

Higher education

Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College: In-person classes canceled Wednesday. The school posted on social media “All MGCCC locations and centers will be closed on Wednesday, April 10, 2024 due to inclement weather. All classes will be virtual. Residence halls and dining hall at the Perkinston Campus will remain open. College administration will continue to monitor the weather and will send out more information via Regroup and the official College social media channels as it becomes available.”

University of Southern Mississippi: In-person classes canceled Wednesday. A social media posting read “All operations at The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg and along the Gulf Coast will be closed on Wednesday, April 10 in anticipation of severe weather. Students should expect to hear from faculty regarding any transition to online course delivery.”

William Carey University: In-person classes canceled Wednesday. “Due to the threat of inclement weather, all William Carey University locations (Hattiesburg, Tradition, and Baton Rouge) will be closed tomorrow, April 10th. All in-person classes will shift to Canvas. Campuses are scheduled to reopen as normal on Thursday, April 11th. Please monitor local news media and WCU email/social media for further information.”
