‘A mission for love’: Anti-violence march held after Easter Sunday shootings in Austin neighborhood
CHICAGO — An anti-violence march led by local leaders and members of the Chicago Police Department took place in Austin Tuesday outside the location of one of two deadly Easter Sunday shootings in the neighborhood.
Police, clergy and elected officials said they’re trying to bring the community together in the wake of an especially violent weekend.
“When we start having these massive shootings it rings to the core of your heart,” said Ald. Emma Mitts (37th Ward). “We know that somebody is hurting.”
Around 1 a.m. Sunday morning, a young woman was killed and four other women and teen girls were injured when someone shot them inside Poppy’s Chat Room, a business in the 5300 block of West Madison Street in the Austin neighborhood.

Later that afternoon around 2:50 p.m. and about a mile away, a 16-year-old boy was killed and three men injured when someone opened fire on a group of people standing on the sidewalk in the 400 block of North Lavergne Avenue near West Kinzie Street.
No one has been arrested in either shooting.
“We get up, we never give up. And that’s what we’re here to do today,” said CPD 15th District Commander Carlin Morse. “To fellowship, to march, but most importantly, to let everyone know we’re on a mission for love. And we’re going to use this tragic moment to show this love in honor of the victims.”
