Missing Vermont man's body recovered from Connecticut River

Apr. 3—The body of a Vermont man missing since mid-March was recovered from the Connecticut River in Dalton on Wednesday.

Russell Matheson, 52, of Lunenburg, Vermont, was reported missing on March 18, and authorities received information that he may have gone into the river two days earlier. That prompted an intensive, three-day search by dive teams from Vermont and New Hampshire.

The search was suspended when no evidence of the man was found.

Later, however, the New Hampshire Fish and Game sonar/ROV team was reviewing recorded images from those previous searches when they identified a "high probability image" in the river, upstream from where witnesses had seen Matheson, according to a news release.

On Wednesday, the Fish and Game dive team searched that area and found Matheson's body shortly before 10 a.m. The body was released to New Hampshire State Police and the Chief Medical Examiner's Office.
