A Miss America Grows (and Lives) in Brooklyn
Under the shadow of playoff football, Miss America was crowned somewhere on your television late last night. The lucky winner just so happens to be from the hottest city in the world right now: Brooklyn, New York.

Yes, Mallory Hagan was the lucky winner of the 2013 Miss America competition. Hagan, previously known as Miss New York, lives in Park Slope. The 23-year-old fashion student moved to New York three years ago from Alabama. Hagan's answer to a question on gun control is being credited as the reason she won:

"I don’t think the proper way to fight violence is with violence," Hagan said. "I think the proper way is to educate people on guns and the ways we can use them properly. We can lock them up, we can have gun safety classes, we can have a longer waiting period."
She also tap-danced to a James Brown song. That was her (admittedly adorable) talent.

It should go without saying, but Brooklyn is having itself a little moment. Jay-Z and Beyonce gave birth to the borough's first princess, Blue Ivy Carter. The beautiful Barclays Center finally opened, and with it came the arrival of the Brooklyn Nets. In 2015, the borough will add its own hockey team when the New York Islanders relocate to play in the Barclays Center, too.

No word yet on whether Hagan received a call from King Jay-Z congratulating her on bringing the crown to Brooklyn. Heavens only know when the Nets might actually bring a championship to the borough.
