Mirai Nagasu is inspired by the fierce queens of RuPaul's Drag Race

Figure skater Mirai Nagasu can be brilliant on the ice. Graceful and poised, but also powerful and fierce. That’s a lot of emotion to convey during a routine, and it’s an even bigger task when you remember she’s skating and twirling and jumping like a daredevil.

In an interview with Yahoo Sports (which you can see in the video at the top of this post), Mirai talked about how she brings out all those emotions when she skates. And it shouldn’t surprise anyone that when she’s on the ice, Mirai channels her “inner queen” to get the confidence she needs.

Mirai’s not talking about the Queen of England. She’s talking about drag queens. More specifically, the queens of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” television’s campiest and most magnificent reality show. Mirai is inspired by the queens on the show — not just for their superior makeup, fashion, and runway skills, but for having the courage to take a different path and unashamedly be who they are.

It’s clear that RuPaul needs to have Mirai on “Drag Race” next season as a guest judge. And barring that, Mirai needs to pick a RuPaul song for one of her skating routines. A song with the lyrics “cover girl, work it girl, give a twirl” is just too perfect.
