Supporters of proposed mining initiative in Alaska to turn in signatures
JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) -- Supporters of a proposal to require legislative approval of large-scale mining activity in the Bristol Bay region plan to turn in their signatures on Friday.
Supporters hope to get the proposed "Bristol Bay Forever" initiative on next year's ballot.
More than 30,000 qualified signatures are needed for that to happen. According to a news release, supporters plan to turn in about 43,000 signatures.
The proposal would require legislative approval for a "large-scale metallic sulfide mining operation." That is defined as a mining proposal to extract metals including gold and copper from sulfide-bearing rock and directly disturb 640 acres of land or more.
It would almost certainly have bearing on the proposed Pebble Mine project.
