Milwaukee County Board Supervisor Sequanna Taylor has set her sights on a position with the state legislature while also holding positions for Milwaukee County and the City of Milwaukee.

Taylor has announced she plans to run for the District 11 seat in the state Assembly currently held by fellow Democrat Dora Drake, who announced in February she would run for the state Senate seat left vacant by Sen. Lena Taylor's appointment as Milwaukee County Circuit Court judge.

"For the past two decades, I have been honored to serve our community and fight for the issues that matter most," Taylor wrote in an email. "As your State Assemblywoman, I will bring that same passion and tireless commitment to addressing the needs of our district and creating a brighter future for all."

If elected, Taylor told the Journal Sentinel, she will leave her part-time seat on the County Board and hoped to time her departure so that a special election for her seat could coincide with the regular April election in 2025.

"I know there is a spring election next April and my hope is to run the seat for County District 5 in that election," Taylor said, not wanting to put the cost of a special election on taxpayers.

Since 2016, she has served as Milwaukee County Board supervisor representing the northwest side district. Taylor was re-elected with no challengers in April. She has served on the county's community, environment and economic development, and finance committees.

She most recently served as the County Board's vice chair. She did not seek re-election for the position during a County Board vote earlier this month. Taylor was also formerly a member of the Milwaukee School Board and previously was president of the Milwaukee Education Assistant Association.

In mid-November, Taylor began working for the City of Milwaukee as the Family Violence Prevention program coordinator in the Department of Administration's Office of Community Wellness and Safety, according to the city's employee relations.

A special election date has not yet been set for the District 4 Senate seat formerly held by Taylor. Drake would face fellow state Rep. LaKeshia Myers.

Drake did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The partisan primary is Aug. 13; the general election is Nov. 5.
