Millburn cop, known as a 'great guy and dedicated' ID'd as fatal crash victim

Millburn police officer Luke Lyons was identified as the person killed in the car crash on Route 15 in Jefferson this past weekend, according to Millburn police Capt. Mark Azzopardi.

The crash happened this past Sunday at 1:23 a.m. near mile marker 3.5 said Jefferson police Capt. Robert Bush.

Azzopardi called Lyons a "great guy and dedicated police officer." The police captain says he and the entire police department are extremely sad and shocked by the sudden death.

Lyons is a father to loving children, a veteran of the Marine Corps and served on the police force for about four years, said Azzopardi. Lyons was also the lead instructor of the Drone Unit and was described as a leading force in the department.

A GoFundMe was set up by the Millburn Police Department organizing donations for his memorial fund. The police wrote on the fundraising page that Lyons was "a kind, giving, gentle soul with a smile and laugh that would brighten your day."

The New Jersey State PBA posted that "his sudden passing in a motor vehicle crash leaves a hole for so many. He was brother, father, husband, son, and a great cop."

No funeral arrangements have been made yet, but are currently being finalized by the family.
