The Mill Mountain Zoo says two-toed sloths are native to the rain and cloud forests Central and South America. The gentle animals are experts at climbing and spend most of thier lives hanging upside down from trees. Their long arms help them paddle effortlessly, making them great swimmers.

Zoo officials say Lady’s arrival adds diversity to the family and provides visitors with an opportunity to learn more about sloths.

“Aside from conservation programs in good zoos, rainforests are the only area in the world in which this species lives, and we hope to shed light on the need to protect the species and their habitats. Sloths are incredibly special animals, and we are excited for our visitors to have the chance to observe and learn about them up close. Lady’s presence enriches our commitment to conservation education, and we look forward to sharing her with our community,” said Niki Voudren, Mill Mountain Zoo Executive Director.

According to the Mill Mountain Zoo, two-toed sloths have sleepy smiles and long, dense fur. They play a vital role in their ecosystem as seed disperses. As they move through the trees, they unintentionally scatter seeds from the fruits they eat.

To see Lady and learn more about sloths, the Mill Mountain Zoo is inviting animal enthusiasts to the zoo.

The Zoo is on the top of Mill Mountain, just off of Blue Ridge Parkway. For more information, visit their website.
