Milford Library News: Cookbook Club to hold annual Cookie Swap on Wednesday

The Cookbook Club will hold its annual Cookie Swap at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Children’s Program Room.

Members and other interested persons are invited to bring their favorite cookies, with recipe to the meeting to share and swap. Please bring containers to take home cookies, and reusable water bottle. Paper plates and napkins will be provided.

The cookie swaps have been well attended in the past with not only members, but others in the community enjoying the camaraderie and fun. So everyone is encouraged to bake some cookies and bring them to our meeting. You’ll love it.

Please notify Mary Frances Best a few days before the meeting if you are planning to attend, so we can provide enough seating, etc.

For those who are unable to attend the in-house meeting, there will be a Zoom option. Please email Mary Frances if you would like to receive the Zoom link.

If interested in becoming a member, email Mary Frances at mfbest@cwmars.org

A season for holiday reading and baking

Just in time for the holidays, the round table near the Reference Desk will feature fiction and baking titles to get you in the mood.

Stop by the table and select a holiday romance or a book for making the best cookies ever. There a lot to choose from and many more if you ask a librarian.

Annual Mitten Tree drive

Donations of new hats, mittens, gloves, socks and scarves will be accepted in the Children’s Room to hang on the Mitten Tree through Saturday. All donations will be given to local charities. We thank you for your generosity.

Village Art Society exhibit returns

During December, the adult display case and Children’s Room will come alive with the paintings of young artists of the Village Art Society. These were so popular with our patrons last year, we decided to display the group’s new paintings this year.

Under the direction of artist and author Patricia Young, this group began painting in the Granite and Quarry Rooms on Saturdays two years ago. When COVID-19 interfered with regular lessons, Patricia improvised an en plein air studio on her deck in the spring and summer.

Artists exhibiting are Sophie Cormier, 8; and Makenna Laramee, 13. Using famous artists’ works for inspiration, Patricia taught both technique and art history simultaneously. Please come to see their work. Each artist has several paintings.

The gift of sight

The round table close to the entrance will display books for those who have vision issues. Featuring a selection of our large print books the display includes large print Romance, Mystery and Western titles. More large print books can be found on the wall beginning near the fiction section and continuing around the back wall. Lots of large print!

New museum passes and more

The Milford Town Library has 11 passes to museums and other venues. Several are new this season, and some museums are just now admitting visitors. To see the full list and reserve your date, go to www.milfordtownlibrary.org, and click on Museum Passes.

A new pass this season is for The Trustees, which is a collection of more than 120 special places close to home and across Massachusetts. The Trustees GoPass admits a family of two adults and children under 18 for free at many of the sites. Some sites are free to everyone. A guide, entitled Where Wonder Happens, to exploring all the places in color and arranged by region is available at the Circulation Desk. This may be checked out by patrons when they reserve the pass. Take a look at it. There are wonderful places to visit.

The Museum of Science has some special exhibits worth considering. All Aboard: Trains at Science Park returned November 20. This exhibit is free with Exhibit Hall entry pass. You can visit classis miniature landscapes with model trains, snow-covered peaks, engaging activities, and even a few surprises!

For only a $6 add-on ticket, go on an extraordinary winter adventure with the Polar Express 4-D Experience. Make a day of your visit and also experience the Rocky Mountain Express for an additional $6 add-on ticket. Journey back to the age of steam and the ingenuity that shaped a nation.

Center Book Group

The Center Book Group will meet next at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 21, in the COA conference room at the Senior Center to discuss "The Snow Child" by Eowyn Ivey.

This “fairy tale” for grownups takes place in Alaska, 1920. Jack and Mabel arrive as new homesteaders who are already tired and disillusioned. Their farm and the rough climate drain all of Jack’s resources and Mabel is deeply lonely. During one of the storms, they build a snow child, a rare cooperative, creative, and joyful moment for the couple.

The next day, the snow child is gone but there is a little, blond-haired girl running around in the forest, with a red fox by her side. Who is she? What does her presence mean for Jack and Mabel?

The novelist Robert Goolrick commented that "If Willa Cather and Gabriel Garcia Marquez had collaborated on a book, "The Snow Childre" would be it.” Sounds inviting, doesn’t it?

The Center Book Group welcomes newcomers to these informal, but informative meetings. To reserve a copy of The Snow Child, please email aberard@cwmars.org or call the Information Desk at 508-473-2145, Ext. 2.

Contemporary Book Group

The Contemporary Book Group will meet at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 26, in the ESL Classroom to discus V.E. Schwab’s novel, "The Invisible Life of Addie Larue."

This 2020 fantasy novel tells of Adeline Larue who makes a Faustian deal with the devil to live forever. However, a life of immortality is not all its cracked up to be when no one remembers who you are; that is until someone does!

To reserve a copy of The Invisible Life of Addie Larue, or for more information about the group, email Shelley at ssgammt@cwmars.org.

Puzzle tables

The library’s Puzzle Tables are back. We discontinued them during the worst of the pandemic, but now there are two tables with puzzles for patrons and others to enjoy.

ESL and citizenship classes

For now, we have canceled the Drop-in Reading Group for ESL students on Mondays from 6-7 p.m. We may add another group or extend one of the other drop-in groups on Tuesdays or Thursdays.

Drop-in Conversation classes are held on Tuesdays from 7-8 p.m. The regular drop-in ESL classes meet on Thursdays from 7-8 p.m.

Active Citizen: Citizenship Prep classes are held on Saturdays from 1-3 p.m. (this program is not a drop-in as students must be nearing minimum residency requirements (5 years in nearly all cases). The instructor or ESL coordinator needs to approve you for the course. The instructor, Atef Sorial, worked as a guidance counselor in his native Egypt, went through the naturalization process himself and he now works with the Milford Public Schools and Milford Hospital on Project Search.

Copies of the December calendar will be at the Reference Desk, the Grab ‘n Go Table, near the ESL classroom, and on our website.

Share your collection

Many people did a lot of sorting and organizing in their home spaces during the earliest days of the pandemic. Perhaps, you were one of those people who found a collection that you hadn’t seen in a while or even forgotten you had.

Please think about sharing your collection with the Milford Town Library. Both the adult and children’s departments have a display case that can securely showcase your treasures.

Pre-pandemic we usually had rotating monthly displays including dolls, badges, photographs, travel souvenirs, tea cups, snowmen, penguins, key fobs.

Please contact the Information Desk at 508-473-2145, Ext. 2, to schedule your month.

Food pantry donations

The Milford Town Library accepts donations to the Daily Bread Food Pantry every day. During the pandemic, when food insecurity has become more severe for many, donations of food for the pantry are especially welcome. These donations may be placed in the blue bucket under the Friends of the Library Book Table.

Library Hours

The Milford Town Library will be closed from 9-10 a.m. on Thursday for a staff meeting. The library will resume hours at 10 a.m.
