Mike Mulvey fired as coach of A-League's Central Coast

GOSFORD, Australia (AP) — Coach Mike Mulvey has been fired by the Central Coast Mariners after they lost to Wellington Phoenix 8-2 in the A-League.

A club statement released early Sunday said: "The Central Coast Mariners can today advise that the club has parted ways with head coach Mike Mulvey, effective immediately."

The Mariners did not say who would take over as coach for the final six matches of the season.

The heavy loss on Saturday left the last-placed Mariners with just seven points from 21 games.

Mulvey joined the Mariners before this season. His start was a difficult one when former Olympic champion sprinter Usain Bolt staged a highly publicized but unsuccessful tryout with the team.
