Mike McCarthy Addressed the Media before Packers Camp

At last, the Green Bay Packers have officially started 2016 season with the start of training camp. Before training camp began, McCarthy addressed the media to basically give a state of the Packers address. His main focus was a problem that went hand-in-hand for the Packers last season – injuries and a bad offense.

I say those two go together because Jordy Nelson was gone for the entire year with a knee injury, the offensive line had some injuries to deal with. These factors led to the offense being bad in an otherwise great tradition of being great.

For what McCarthy had to say about the state of his offense, it was reminiscent of what the Packers legend Vince Lombardi used to do. If you’re unfamiliar with how Lombardi would start camp, he would bring everything back to the basics.

“Well, I think like anything in life, when it doesn’t go the way you anticipate it to go, it doesn’t hit the standard you’re accustomed to, you have to go back and take a hard look at it,” McCarthy said in his annual press conference commencing training camp, via ESPN.

“And we definitely did that. I know more times than not my natural reaction is go back to the basics and that’s really what we’ve done as an offensive staff, and I would think our players echo that.

“We need to be much better offensively in the area of fundamentals. Last year was not good enough. And the numbers reflected that. We clearly addressed that and had a chance to go back and view all the cut-ups. Those cut-ups and lessons learned will be part of our installation phase in training camp, but we need to improve on a number of things fundamentally. And that’s what training camp is for.”

Getting back to health, Nelson was listed on the Physically Unable to Perform list for the first day of camp. That should surprise no one, as the Packers are being as cautious as they can with his return.

On the flipside, Aaron Rodgers cut dairy out of his diet and received high praise from his head coach on the decision to get healthier.

“He’s in great shape. I would say this is the best shape I’ve seen him in,” McCarthy said of Rodgers, via ESPN.

I am not surprised that Rodgers is looking healthier and that he’s ready to go. Last season was a rollercoaster of a season for Rodgers and the Packers.

Like McCarthy, Rodgers knows last year started off great, went south and then the Packers started to pick it up towards the end. Sadly, it was too little too late and the Packers ended with one of its worst offensive season in years.

If training camp is a necessary tool to start the new year on the right foot, the Packers are ready.
