Migrant boat capsizes off Lampedusa, many rescued

ROME (AP) — Italy's navy says nine bodies have been recovered so far from the capsizing of a migrant boat off the Sicilian island of Lampedusa.

Navy spokesman Cmdr. Marco Maccaroni says another 221 people have been rescued and are on Italian and Maltese ships. An unspecified number of injured were taken by helicopter to Lampedusa.

Maccaroni says the dead include at least four women and a child; another five are on board a Maltese ship.

The ship capsized Friday some 65 miles (105 kilometers) southeast of Lampedusa, where a shipwreck last week left at least 339 migrants dead and prompted a round of calls for the European Union to do more to stop desperate migrants from making the deadly crossing.
