The 2018 midterm elections ended with a historic slate of Democrats — including first-time politicians, women and other diverse candidates — taking back control of the US House of Representatives.

And yet, in many ways, the supposed “blue wave” was underwhelming in that expectations for the minority party had swelled so dramatically ahead of the crucial vote.
