Middle Tennessee softball coach who also serves as commissioner may plead in DUI case

Attorneys appear to be moving forward with a plea agreement for a Mt. Juliet High School softball coach and Wilson County commissioner arrested on DUI charges in July.

Kevin Costley was also charged with implied consent and possession of a handgun while under the influence when he was stopped July 20 by the Mt. Juliet Police Department at a Kroger on North Mt. Juliet Road.

Costley had a court hearing scheduled on Friday in Wilson County.

Attorneys discussed a plea agreement being negotiated as Costley meets several required conditions for a potential plea. Details of a possible plea were not discussed and Judge Matthew Cowan set another court date for June 18 in Cannon County.

Costley did not attend Friday's court hearing. His appearance had been waived. Attorney Jeff Cherry is representing Costley.

Cherry has said that Costley was not involved in a crash before the stop.

And Costley was not charged with leaving the scene of a vehicle crash.

Costley has continued in his role as girls softball coach and an educational assistant at Mt. Juliet High, Wilson County Schools Public Information Officer Bart Barker said. He is the District 8 county commissioner, according to the county website.

Costley was elected to the county commission in 2018 and was reelected in 2022.
