Michigan woman spends first Mother’s Day at home after 5-year coma

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A Michigan woman spent her first Mother’s Day at home Sunday following a five-year coma.

Jennifer Flewellen’s mother stayed by her side throughout the coma, Mary Free Bed shared on its Facebook page.

In 2017, the then-35-year-old was critically hurt in a car crash, CBS News reports. It reports that despite doctors saying Flewellen would never wake up, her mom, Peggy Means, wouldn’t let them take her daughter off life support.

“I just couldn’t let her go,” Means told CBS.

After five years, her daughter woke up — when she laughed at a joke Means made.

Flewellen, a mom of three, left Grand Rapids and went home to Dowagiac in January.

“Jenn’s positivity and resilience have been the shining stars in her remarkable recovery journey,” Mary Free Bed wrote. “With the unwavering support of her mom and dedicated caretaker, Peggy Means, Jenn achieved significant milestones in speech, mobility and endurance.”

Mary Free Bed wished the pair a happy Mother’s Day in a post on Sunday.
