Michigan teen faces murder count in fatal shooting of Muncie man

MUNCIE, Ind. — A Michigan teenager has been preliminarily charged with murder in last month's fatal shooting of a Muncie man.

Adonis L. Logan, 18 — a resident of Dearborn, a western suburb of Detroit — is accused of killing Jack R. Simpson, 55, in a home in Elgin Manor Apartments, in the 2500 block of South Elgin Street.

The fatal shooting took place on the evening of Sept. 16, according to court documents. The victim's remains were found in the apartment on Sept. 22.

While emergency responders were at first called to what was reported to be a cardiac arrest, it was later determined Simpson had been shot multiple times.

According to an affidavit, when the Michigan teen went to the northside Muncie apartment complex on Sept. 16, he was accompanied by Adriana M. Dillow, also 18. She is preliminarily charged with aiding, inducing or causing murder.

Muncie Police Chief Nate Sloan said both teenagers were arrested Wednesday in the Detroit area and are awaiting extradition to Indiana. In addition to Muncie officers, police from Dearborn and Detroit and FBI agents participated in the arrests, Sloan said.

According to the affidavit, Logan was questioned by Muncie police in Dearborn on Wednesday and admitted to shooting Simpson "multiple times, including while Jack was on the ground not moving."

Logan claimed the shooting took place because Simpson years earlier had molested the Michigan teen's girlfriend when she was 14, the court document said.

According to the affidavit, Simpson's brother told investigators they were in the process of moving to Missouri, and that Jack Simpson had returned to Muncie on the day of his shooting to pick up the last of their belongings.

At least two witnesses, interviewed after the body was found on Sept. 22, told police they had heard gunshots at the apartment complex on Sept. 16.

The affidavit indicated surveillance video showed what is alleged to be a Nissan Altima driven by Dillow arriving at the Elgin Manor complex on the evening of Sept. 16, and then pulling away, without headlights on, a few minutes later.

Investigators also reviewed what are reported to be text messages exchanged by Dillow and the shooting victim prior to the slaying.

In a news release issued Wednesday evening, Sloan said "while this matter is still being thoroughly investigated, there are no suspects at large and there is no threat to the public."

The police chief asked anyone with information on the homicide to call the Muncie Police Department's detective division at 765-747-4867.

Simpson is believed to be Delaware County's sixth homicide victim in 2023.
