Michigan QB Wilton Speight out 'multiple weeks'
Michigan will be without starting quarterback Wilton Speight against Michigan State.
Speight went down with an undisclosed injury during Michigan’s win over Purdue on Sept. 23. With Michigan coming off a bye week, Harbaugh said Monday that Speight will miss “multiple weeks.” John O’Korn will get the start with Speight sidelined and redshirt freshman Brandon Peters has moved up to No. 2 on the depth chart. True freshman Dylan McCaffrey will be the third-string QB.
O’Korn, a senior, played most of the game against the Boilermakers after Speight was injured in the first quarter. The Wolverines trailed 10-7 at halftime, but O’Korn led the team to a 28-10 victory. In the win, O’Korn completed 18-of-26 passes for 270 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
Now, O’Korn will keep that starting role with the rival Spartans coming into Ann Arbor on Saturday night.
O’Korn began his career at Houston where he started as a true freshman. He lost his starting role to Greg Ward as a sophomore and chose to transfer. He landed at Michigan in 2015 and redshirted before serving as Speight’s backup in 2016. O’Korn battled for the starting role with Speight in preseason, but Speight won the top spot again.
O’Korn saw brief action in Week 1 against Florida, completing his only pass attempt for 37 yards, after Speight threw a pair of interceptions. Overall at Michigan, O’Korn has completed 39-of-61 passes for 480 yards and three touchdowns.
Michigan, 4-0 on the season, is ranked No. 7 nationally.
