Michigan man charged with domestic abuse aggravated assault in Sioux Falls

Sioux Falls Police Department officers issued an arrest warrant Monday for a man they say is connected with a shooting that took place at about 5 p.m. Saturday near the 800 block of North Irene Place.

Marcell Edrease Caldwell, 34, from Battle Creek, Michigan, is being charged with four different counts of domestic abuse aggravated assault: one for bodily injury with indifference to human life, one for bodily injury with a dangerous weapon, one for serious bodily injury and one for a deadly weapon. He has a $50,000 cash bond, department spokesman Sam Clemens said Tuesday morning during the daily police briefing with media.

Clemens said officers saw Caldwell driving near 11th Street and First Avenue, then pursued him to 14th Street and Dakota Avenue. They arrested Caldwell without incident.

Clemens said police aren’t sure what happened in the shooting on Saturday afternoon, but know that two men were involved and the suspect pulled out a gun and shot the victim in the leg, breaking the victim’s femur and sending him to the hospital with a severe injury.

Other gunshot call from Tuesday morning

In a separate case that Clemens said has similarities to Saturday’s case, SFPD officers responded to a gunshot call at about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday near the 100 block of South Lake Avenue.

Clemens said two men argued or had a dispute inside an apartment, and the suspect left. Once he was outside, he fired a gun into the victim’s apartment, which struck the victim in the leg. Then, the suspect left the scene, Clemens said.

Officers haven’t been able to speak to the 57-year-old victim yet in this case to determine what happened or who the suspect may be. Police are still investigating, but the two incidents are not related.
