Michigan earthquakes are rare

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — With a magnitude 4.8 earthquake shaking up nerves in the northeast around New York City, we looked at quakes that have been felt here in Michigan in modern history.

According to several sources, there have only been six earthquakes measuring more than a magnitude 3. This includes a magnitude 3.5 earthquake centered outside of Potterville on Sept. 2, 1994.

  • 1947 Coldwater – Magnitude 4.6

  • 1988 Wakefield – Magnitude 3.6

  • 1994 Lansing (Potterville) – Magnitude 3.5

  • 2011 Grosse Pointe – Magnitude 3.0

  • 2015 Galesburg – Magnitude 4.2

  • 2015 Union City – Magnitude 3.3
