Michelle Obama comments on Melania Trump plagiarism controversy
Michelle Obama had just four words to say about Melania Trump and the July plagiarism scandal that occurred when the wife of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump lifted portions of Obama's 2008 speech at the Democratic National Convention for her own convention address.
Speaking to Stephen Colbert on Tuesday's episode of The Late Show, the First Lady said, "Yeah, that was tough." Obama left it at that and didn't comment further.
Following the Republican National Convention in July, it was revealed that Melania's speech included exact words and phrases from Obama's 2008 presentation. Despite initial protestations from the Donald Trump presidential campaign that the speech wasn't plagiarized, a staff writer named Meredith McIver later admitted to the mistake
"In working with Melania Trump on her recent First Lady speech, we discussed many people who inspired her and messages she wanted to share with the American people," she said. "A person she has always liked is Michelle Obama. Over the phone, she read me some passages from Mrs. Obama’s speech as examples. I wrote them down and later included some of the phrasing in the draft that ultimately became the final speech. I did not check Mrs. Obama’s speeches. That was my mistake, and I feel terrible for the chaos I have caused Melania and the Trumps, as well as to Mrs. Obama. No harm was meant."
