Michelle Carter, the infamous 22-year-old who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter for encouraging her boyfriend, Conrad Roy III, to act on his suicidal thoughts, is being released from prison today.

Carter was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison following a trial in August 2017, of which only 15 months were deemed mandatory to serve. However, the young woman didn't end up starting her sentence until February 2019, after her lawyers requested time to appeal, and now - just 11 months after she went to jail - Michelle Carter is set to be freed.

Carter is being released early due to good behaviour, Jonathan Darling, spokesman at the Bristol County Sheriff's Office confirmed.

"Ms. Carter has been a model inmate here at the Bristol County House of Corrections. She has participated in a variety of programs, held a job inside the jail, has been polite to our staff and volunteers, has gotten along with the other inmates, and we've had no discipline issues with her whatsoever," he said.

Michelle Carter's case has been a highly controversial one. As documented in last year's HBO true-crime documentary, I Love You, Now Die, her boyfriend Conrad Roy killed himself on July 13, 2014 by carbon monoxide poisoning.

The 18-year-old was found dead inside his pickup truck in a KMart car park, having locked himself inside. Days later, when police looked through the teenager's phone to try to determine why he took his own life, they came across hundreds of shocking messages from Michelle, in which she had urged him on.

"Do you think tonight really is the night you're gonna do it?" a then-17-year-old Michelle messaged Conrad, just eight days before his death.

"I think," he replied.

"Theres a difference between saying 'I'm gonna try to commit suicide' and 'I am going to commit suicide'." Michelle responded. Shortly after, she messaged again: "You don't want it bad enough. You already know you're gonna fail because a part of you wants to fail."

Following Carter's guilty verdict, Conrad Roy III's mum, Lynn Roy, told CBS' 48 Hours: "I think she needs to be held responsible for her actions ’cause she knew exactly what she was doing. She knew exactly what she was doing and what she said.

"I don’t believe she has a conscience."

Michelle will be released from prison later today.
