The New Orleans Saints haven’t changed at all from 2012. They’re scoring a ton of points and mostly giving up more points, as they seem destined to finish 7-9 or worse for the fourth time in five years.

Sunday Moments: The best plays from Week 7 of NFL football

While Drew Brees continues to chase Peyton Manning’s records and figures to be one of the NFL’s top passing leaders this season, the emergence of a rookie wide receiver has been this team’s top story so far. If it weren’t for a miserable defense, perhaps more people would notice what second-round pick Michael Thomas has been doing.

Through six games this season, Thomas has 36 catches for 437 yards and three touchdowns. Sunday against a stout Kansas City Chiefs secondary was his breakout game; racking up 10 catches for 130 yards.

He ranks second on the Saints in receiving, only trailing Brandin Cooks. That’s right, he’s outplayed Willie Snead and Coby Fleener thus far. There’s a lot to like about Thomas. He’s speedy and has incredible size (6-3, 212 pounds,) and has amazing athleticism when tracking the ball.

This should give Saints fans plenty of optimism for years to come. Cooks, Snead and Thomas are 24 or under. Any quarterback who succeeds Drew Brees is going to have a lot of fan with these three rising superstars.

If the Saints were 4-2 and leading the NFC South, Brees and Thomas would be gaining more attention. Sadly, that hasn’t been the case so far.

With the Saints hosting the Seattle Seahawks and that dangerous Legion of Boom secondary on Sunday, Thomas has a chance to show the world what he can do.
