Michael Phelps Teaches 6-Month-Old Son Boomer to Swim Underwater: ‘He’s Just Like Daddy!’

When your dad is arguably the greatest swimmer of all time (and the most decorated Olympian in history, with a total gold-medal count of 18), you start swim lessons early.

Michael Phelps recently enrolled his infant son Boomer Robert in parent/child pool classes — and not surprisingly, the 6-month-old is progressing well!

“I would consider him successful!” says Boomer’s instructor in a Facebook Live video after he goes underwater for a half second and then swims to Phelps, 31.

Clinging to his dad’s chest, Boomer then smiles shyly for the phone camera, held by Phelps’ wife Nicole Johnson Phelps, 31.

Another video posted on Wednesday shows Phelps and his wife in a group “Get Wet” class, singing “I”m a Little Teapot” to Boomer while Phelps narrates his son’s lesson.

“The earlier the better for swim lessons,” says Phelps in the clip. “6 months is probably the minimum.”

“Any time you can get them in the water for water safety, the earlier the better.”

Phelps has had Boomer in the pool since his triumphant return from the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, sharing adorable snaps from family time in the water.

“The little man loved the water today!! @boomerrphelps and I got some extra laps in today!! #mpswim” Phelps captioned one photo of himself and Boomer, then only 9 weeks old.

The champion swimmer has made no secret of the fact that he wants more kids — particularly a daughter at some point. And in November, Johnson Phelps told PEOPLE that she would like to grow their family soon.

“Of course we have plans for a second baby!” she said. “I don’t have one right now, but we are so looking forward to more!”
