‘Michael Jackson: Searching for Neverland’ Focuses on Fatherly Side of King of Pop

Michael Jackson: Searching for Neverland premiered May 29 on Lifetime, and it portrayed a different side of the King of Pop. The biopic was based on the book Remember the Time: Protecting Michael Jackson in His Final Days, which was written by two of Jackson’s bodyguards, Bill Whitfield and Javon Beard. The story was told from the guards’ perspective and hoped to show how Jackson was a doting father who just wanted a normal life for himself and his family.

The role of Michael Jackson was played by an apparently famous impersonator named Navi. Navi admitted he is an impersonator and not an actor, but he wanted this side of the story told, so he agreed to play Jackson.

The biopic is narrated by the Bill Whitfield character, and it was clear that the bodyguard had a deep respect for Jackson both as a performer and as a person. In the movie several references are made to how Beard and Whitfield worked for as much as 5 months without receiving a paycheck. (Michael Jackson’s estate issued a statement calling the movie “unsanctioned.”)

Perhaps this latest story in Michael Jackson’s tempestuous life will give fans a new perspective on how they remember the King of Pop.
