Michael J. Fox sees Parkinson's fight as 'one of the great gifts' in his life
Michael J. Fox sat down with Jane Pauley for a very candid interview on CBS Sunday Morning. Fox opened up about his decades-long battle with Parkinson’s disease, going back to his initial reaction when he was first diagnosed. Fox told Pauley, “That is one of the few times in my life I felt like saying, ‘Do you know who I am? This is ridiculous, you can’t tell me that.’ This was a case when I just thought, This is preposterous that this is happening to me.”
While dealing with Parkinson’s Disease has become a perpetual struggle for the Back to the Future star, he made it clear that it has also become a gift. “I wish I wasn’t in this situation,” Fox said, “but it’s been one of the great gifts in my life that I’ve been in the position to take my view of the suckitude of it and merge it with other people’s view of the suckitude of it and try to find an answer.”
Since 2000, The Michael J. Fox Foundation has raised $750 million for Parkinson’s research, so some would say that the actor has been the perfect spokesperson for the disease. Pauley told Fox, “You’ve heard this a thousand times, but it couldn’t have happened to a better person,” to which Fox responded, “Yeah, I’m getting used to that idea.”
