Mich. unions remember workers killed on the job, urge lawmakers for workplace safety measures
LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Union leaders, workers and lawmakers are calling for better protections to prevent workplace injuries and deaths in Michigan.
Michigan State AFL-CIO President Karla Swift led the event at Wentworth Park on Monday for Workers Memorial Day, a national day of remembrance for workers who have been killed or injured.
House Minority Leader Tim Greimel says his fellow Democrats plan to introduce legislation this week concerning workplace safety. Greimel spokeswoman Katie Carey says in an email that Republican Gov. Rick Snyder signed bills last year that cut into workplace safety, like eliminating the Occupational Health Standards Commission.
Details on the proposed legislation weren't immediately available.
Michigan State University medicine professor Dr. Ken Rosenman says about 120 people in Michigan die each year in the workplace.
