The Miami Herald earned three awards in the 2023 Associated Press Sports Editors (APSE) Contest.

The Herald’s Michelle Kaufman earned a top-10 award in beat writing in Division A, the largest newspaper classification for her coverage on Inter Miami and star Lionel Messi.

In addition, photographer Matias Ocner earned top 10 awards for action photo and feature photo.

“The Miami Herald Sports department has a history of some of the best sports journalism in the country, and I’m glad Michelle and Matias were recognized by their peers,” said John Devine, the Herald’s executive sports editor. “It’s not the reason we do what we do, but it’s great to put your best work against others and see how you stack up.”

This year’s APSE Contest, judged by sports editors and journalists from across the nation, recognized work that was published in 2023. The Miami Herald will be honored in June at the APSE Summer Conference Awards Banquet in Charlotte, North Carolina.
