Seen as deep at the defensive end position, the Miami Dolphins decided to trade third-year player Chris McCain to the New Orleans Saints for a conditional seventh round draft pick. While McCain has not been a top contributor on the defense, the move is possible a questionable one from the front office.

A pass-rushing talent that was complimented by many, McCain never managed to put the whole package together during his time with the Dolphins. A 2014 undrafted free agent out of the University of California, McCain only managed to obtain seven tackles and two sacks during his 18 career games.

The biggest highlights of his young NFL career have been a sack of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and a blocked punt during his rookie season. However, McCain never was an every down defensive end and was used mostly in passing situations and on special teams for punts and field goals.

Currently at the defensive end position in Miami are Cameron Wake, Mario Williams, Andre Branch and Jason Jones. Three of the four have starter for a good chunk of their NFL career with Branch serving as the only member too have earned starting reps within the past year when he played with Jacksonville.

With McCain unlikely to obtain the minutes that he was looking for with the Dolphins this season he was traded to the New Orleans Saints. For many NFL Insiders, the move to New Orleans will not be a shock with former Miami interim coach Dan Campbell now serving as the assistant head coach with the Saints.

A major risk for this type of trade is the loss of the pass rushing talent that is McCain. Though the rest of his game never met the heights of his pass rushing ability, McCain was a solid situational player for the Miami Dolphins defense. If any of the four defensive ends ahead of him get injured or miss time this season, the loss of McCain will be amplified.

Receiving only a seventh round pick in return, the Miami Dolphins also did got gain much from this move. While it may have occurred to potentially open a roster slot up for a rookie or another player, if McCain goes on to have a solid season with the Saints, this move will undoubtedly be questioned by many of the Dolphins’ faithful.
