Last year, Cameron Wake suffered a torn Achilles, an injury that can be detrimental to any NFL player especially one that is in their mid 30s. Since then, Wake has proved many people wrong. At the age of 34, the four-time pro bowler has helped the Miami Dolphins make some noise in the AFC and is a big reason the team is currently riding a six game win streak. Here are some reasons why he should receive the Comeback Player of the Year Award.

Torn Achilles Are Hard To Come Back From

Do you know how hard it is to come back from an injury like this? I did not expect Wake to be performing the way he has been in the past couple of weeks. The former Penn State standout is clearly on a mission to make the playoffs, something that would add to his legacy in Miami. Unfortunately, Wake was not around the last time the Miami Dolphins won the AFC title. He was playing in the CFL for the BC Lions and later joined the Phins in 2009.

According to Dr. John Hewitt, who has studied injuries in the NFL for many years, says that only two-thirds of NFL players can every make a comeback to the league after suffering this injury. What about the ones that do? He says that those player’s performances are routinely affected and they can’t get back to the level they once were. Well, Dr. Hewitt should take a look at Miami’s left defensive end because he is defining odds over there.

Statistics

In the last five games, Wake has recorded at least one sack. It all started in the game against the Buffalo Bills where he had 1.5 sacks. Since then, he has been on a tear. The following game against the Jets he had two sacks and two forced fumbles. Every game after that he has had at least one sack. If he continues to put up these type of numbers, he will have the award on lockdown.

The Team’s Win Streak

A long time ago the Miami Dolphins were actually being considered as one of the worst teams in the NFL. The team was 1-4 and people were already questioning the addition of Adam Gase. Well, according to multiple news outlets Wake decided to become the vocal leader of the team. He was not going to let this season slip away and his pre-game speeches started to motivate this squad. As the team continues this hot streak, I predict Wake will assert his dominance on any offensive lineman that gets in his way.
