Over the course of the next week or so, we will be taking a look at the Miami Dolphins newest rookie draft picks. Now up to bat today is the Miami Dolphins second sixth round draft pick from this past NFL Draft, safety Jordan Lucas

Dolphins Rookie Profile: Jordan Lucas

The Player

A player competing for a depth position in Miami, Jordan Lucas is a player that could provide more as a special teamer than an player on the Dolphins’ defense. Lucas will also bring with him the leadership ability that you cannot teach a player, making him potentially a nice pickup for the roster as a whole.

Reminds me personally of a Jason Trusnik type of player. Depending on whether or not he makes the roster, his leadership ability could eventually become the determining factor. A potential leader for rookies and young players on the team, Lucas could become a major voice in the locker room before too long.

Performing for the Miami Dolphins on special teams, Lucas could also moonlight as a backup player in the secondary given his experience that he obtained during his time at Penn State.

The School

Playing as both a cornerback and safety for the Penn State Nittany Lions, Jordan Lucas earned much experience as a three year starter while in school. Though his senior season was cut short due to injury, he was on track to record career highs in every defensive category.

Team Captain for the Nittany Lions last season, Jordan Lucas has proven his leadership ability over the course of his career at Penn State. Another area that could help Lucas’ NFL career is his integrity and commitment. The first recruit of the Bill O’Brien era, he has the character needed to succeed as a role player in the NFL.

As far as his on the field skills go, there is not much that is going to help Lucas. The main thing that will is his football IQ which he garnered at Penn State. Playing smart is an area where he succeeds, which will allow him to improve every year he is in the league.

The Position

Jordan Lucas comes to the Miami Dolphins with all the looks of a career special teamer. While he has the experience playing in the secondary, he is not yet talented enough to really contend for a starting or backup role on the roster.

Special teams seems to be calling his name. Thanks to his football IQ and leadership skills, he should be able to make the roster. If he remains with the Dolphins for at least a few seasons, look for him to become a major leader on the special teams both on and off the field.

The Tape

Wherever he settles into the team this season, Jordan Lucas has the leadership skills and football IQ nescessary to fit into an organization. Coaching or private training could be in his future.
