Miami Dolphins place franchise tag on Jarvis Landry
On the first day that teams could begin tagging players, the Miami Dolphins placed a non-exclusive franchise tag on receiver Jarvis Landry for the 2018 season.

The Dolphins’ second-round pick in 2014 led the NFL in receptions, while his 112 catches set a single-season franchise record. That’s impressive considering he was reeling in passes from the half-way retired Jay Cutler and stop-gap quarterback Matt Moore. Landry also averaged a career-low 8.8 yards per catch and finished 13 yards shy of 1,000 yards, but caught a career-high nine touchdowns.
Spending the projected $16.2 million for a tagged receiver is a no-brainer for a player of Landry’s caliber, however, the Dolphins now have until the 4 p.m. ET deadline on July 16 to get him signed to a long-term deal. Due to his status as a slot receiver, the ongoing negotiations will be anything but easy. Last month, Landry felt disrespected during negotiations with the Dolphins, resulting in his agent, Demarius Bilbo, addressing any doubts about his value.

“With all this, ‘What type of receiver is he — slot or outside?’ — or all this, he’s a No. 1 receiver,” Bilbo said. “He’s a No. 1 receiver.
“No matter what you classify him as, or how you use him in that offense, he’s a No.1 receiver. …So at the end of the day Jarvis understands his value and he wants to be compensated as such.”
The Miami Herald reported that Landry was offered a long-term deal that was valued in the $13 million per season range.
