In what is the closest thing to an actual regular season game that we will get, the Miami Dolphins defeated the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday night by a score of 17-6. Winning the contest against an extremely talented Falcons team, hope is a plenty for Dolphins fans at the present as the team prepares for the regular season.

Hard Knocks: Rams football is a business

With the fourth week of the preseason left for the backups and roster spot battles, next week’s game against the Titans will not factor into what we may see during the regular season. All of that said, Miami had their best preseason game against Atlanta on Thursday but still needs to find ways at improvement before week one.

The first-team defense was on fire against Atlanta, holding the Falcons to three first half points. That stat is slightly misleading given that star safety Reshad Jones intercepted a Matt Ryan pass in the endzone during the first half to keep Atlanta from scoring. However, though the defense at times bent, it never broke no matter what defensive unit was on the field.

On the offensive side of the ball, the biggest moment of the night came in the second quarter when offseason signing Arian Foster scored his first touchdown as a member of the Miami Dolphins. Inside the three-yard line, Foster juked right and found a hole, dashing into the endzone past a couple of the Falcons defenders.

Also on offense, quarterback Ryan Tannehill was again impressive despite throwing a single interception. Going 20-for-29 passing, Tannehill’s play allowed the Miami offense to be aggressive at times while also playing with a slow and steady approach in moving the football down the field.

The other form of good news on offense came in the form of center Anthony Steen who played well in his first action at the center position. Having never played a down in the NFL, Steen only had one hiccup, fumbling an early snap to Tannehill that the quarterback managed to recover.

If the first team members on the Miami Dolphins roster can continue to play this way into the regular season, there may yet be hope for this team and new head coach Adam Gase. While I still believe playoffs may be out of the question, they are beginning to look a lot less far fetched than I originally believed.
