New Mexico racehorse trainer has winning horse in Saudi Cup

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – A racehorse team with New Mexico ties, has won an international competition taking home a whopping $10 million. The horse named Senor Buscador took first place in the Saudi Cup, beating out world-famous names.

A New Mexico-trained racehorse has become an international champion. Last weekend, Senor Buscador came in first place at the Saudi Cup, nicknamed the “World’s Richest Race”. “Very surreal, outstanding,” said Todd Fincher, Senor Buscador’s Trainer.

New Mexico trainer, Todd Fincher has trained Senor Buscador since he was born. With more than 25 years of experience, he says Buscador has practiced in Ruidoso Downs, Zia, and Sunland Park, but Fincher says Buscador had a rocky rise to fame. “He had a little injury after a race in New Orleans, and then he had some time off, and then he had some more bad luck, a stall injury,” says Fincher.

Fincher says when they were invited to participate in the $20 million, Saudi Cup, he knew it was a chance to prove Buscador was a champion. “We’ve always known he’s that good and so when he won it was just total vindication for him,” said Fincher.

The race took place on February 24 and although Senor Buscador started off behind, he quickly closed the gap, even beating out the “Breeder’s Cup Classic Winner” named White Abarrio. Fincher says he hopes this is the first of many big wins and helps put New Mexico on the map. “I sure hope it impacts it in a very positive way. I mean we have a lot of good horse trainers here, good owners, good horses, and hopefully people will recognize that and it’ll be a positive for the state of New Mexico,” Fincher said.

Fincher says their next stop is a race in the Dubai World Cup on March 30.
