New Mexico’s government employee pay ranks below national average, Census Bureau data reveals

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Each year, the U.S. Census Bureau compiles data on public employment. The latest numbers reveal New Mexico’s government workers, on average, are paid below the U.S. average for state and local government employees.

The data comes from state and local governments and covers the month of March of 2023. During that month, New Mexico had over 41,000 full-time government employees who were paid an average about $6,000 per month.

The national average was a little over $6,300. California, Connecticut, and New York had the highest paid full-time government employees. The average full-time government employee in California earned $9,034.48 a month, the data shows.

In New Mexico, higher education instructors were generally the highest-paid full time government employees. They earned an average of 11,632 per month, the data shows. Housing and community development workers were among the lowest paid, with an average pay of under 4,000 per month.

New Mexico does rank among the states with the highest per-capita public employment rates. In 2023, New Mexico had 660 state or local government employees per 10,000 residents, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
