Just over a week ago, a young Mets fan named Callie slid into the DMs of her favorite baseball team with a simple goal: High school prom photos at Citi Field. The Mets responded with a not-so-simple challenge: Get 500,000 retweets, and we’ll make it happen.

Now, getting 500,000 retweets on a single tweet is incredibly hard. Even some of President Donald Trump’s most viral tweets, like this one taunting North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, don’t touch 200,000. And Katy Perry, who has more followers (over 108 million) than anybody else on Twitter, hasn’t even hit 10,000 retweets on anything over the past month.

Nonetheless, Callie set out to get the 500,000. She got some early help from Mets players, the team account, and various celebrities, such as Vincent D’Onofrio and William Shatner. And, remarkably, in just eight days …

Retweet challenges aren’t a new phenomenon on Twitter. But one this big is almost unprecedented. And meeting it is even more extraordinary.

Getting to 500,000 is absolutely worthy of a pre-prom trip to Citi Field. In their initial DM, the Mets said they’d allow Callie – and presumably some of her friends? – onto the field before their May 18 game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. They’d have players join in.

Apparently May 18 is actually a week before Callie’s prom. But the Mets will be in Milwaukee on the night of the prom, so they offered her the chance to come seven days earlier.

Still, this sounds like it will be the most memorable pre-prom gathering in Queens this spring. And if the Mets have any sense, they’ll get Mr. and Mrs. Met in a tuxedo and prom dress to make the evening even better.
