Metro Water Services has ‘rain barrels’ on sale

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – Spring planting season is just around the corner, and you may already be making plans for your garden.

Metro Water Services has come up with a way to save money on your water bill, as well as protect the environment.

Why is TN peak tornado season in the spring months?

They are having a sale on “Ivy Rain Barrels” made by Rain Water Solutions. It’s like having your own personal cistern for watering your garden that gathers rainwater from your roof via the gutters.

Metro Water Services Environmental Compliance Officer Gretchen Judkins explained that besides providing free water for your garden and houseplants, it’s good for the environment.

“When water leaves your gutters and your downspouts, it can run across your property and pick up pollutants on the way to the nearest stream,” Judkins pointed out. “So by using an Ivy Rain Barrel, you capture that storm water and it’s not allowed to leave your property and you get to use it for things like gardens and your houseplants.”

Rainwater is also better for the plants.

“Your house plants and your gardens really love the rainwater,” Judkins said. “And it’s better because it doesn’t have the chlorine and the fluoride that our normal tap water does to keep you safe.”

Metro Water Service is making these rain barrels available to Davidson County residents for $54 and out-of-county residents for $74, normally a $149 value.

They are fairly easy to install, but you might have to add some blocks to elevate the barrel and allow gravity to help the water flow out of the bottom.

You also have to cut your gutters shorter and re-attach the downspout to pour into the rain barrel.
