Metra riders see delays after pedestrian hit by train in northwest suburbs

PALATINE, Ill. — Metra riders are facing some interruptions heading into rush hour on Friday afternoon after a pedestrian was hit by a train in the northwest suburbs, causing some delays.

According to Metra officials, inbound and outbound Union Pacific Northwest (UP-NW) trains were halted near Palatine at around 4 p.m. after train #654 struck a pedestrian.

The #654 train, which was scheduled to arrive at Ogilvie Transportation Center at 4:40 pm, will not operate past Palatine due to the crash.

An update from Metra indicated that due to the crash, UP-NW trains #639, scheduled to depart Chicago at 4:05 p.m., and #658, scheduled to depart Des Plaines at 5:07 p.m., will not operate on Tuesday. Train #641 will accommodate #639 and will make all stops.

In another update, Metra indicated that UP-NW train #643, which is scheduled to arrive in McHenry at 5:45 p.m., will express from Ogilvie Transportation Center to McHenry. Train #645 will accommodate passengers to Crystal Lake and train #657 will accommodate passengers to McHenry.

By around 4:30 p.m., officials indicated that outbound trains were back on the move, but were operating with an extensive delay due to the crash. Inbound trains remain halted as of 4:30 p.m

Metra officials later confirmed that the person who was hit was alive and was taken to the hospital after the incident.

It is the second time a pedestrian has been hit by a UP-NW train in the last week. On Monday, a 56-year-old man from Des Plaines was fatally hit by the #666 train in the 1500 block of Miner Street.
