Met-Ed demonstrates what happens when something hits a power line

(WHTM) — Getting near a live electrical line is usually a terrible idea but on Friday there was a rare chance to watch someone else do it safely.

Met-Ed held a live electricity demonstration where folks got to see what happens when a kite string or tree branch hits a power line, or when a squirrel gets into power equipment. Don’t worry, it was a fake squirrel.

But it was a serious message.

“This is to show how dangerous electricity is, we can not make any assumptions” Met-Ed spokesperson Todd Meyers said. “You’ll see the words stop, look and live at different places on this trailer. Means stop what you are doing, look — understand the situation around you, and stay alive.”

You can do that by, among other things, not getting any closer than 30 feet away from a downed power line and by not grasping for a power line if you feel yourself slipping off a ladder
