Messi ties for 3rd on La Liga scoring list

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Lionel Messi scored twice, passing Alfredo Di Stefano on the La Liga career scoring list and tying Raul Gonzalez for third as he led Barcelona over Rayo Vallecano 6-0 on Saturday night.

Messi's 228 league goals are one more than di Stefano, and the 26-year-old trails only Telmo Zarra (251) and Hugo Sanchez (234). His sixth two-goal game this season raised his goals total to 24, including 13 in the league.

Adriano put Barcelona ahead in the second minute, Messi scored on a chip in the 36th and assisted Alexis Sanchez's goal in the 53rd. Pedro Rodriguez scored three minutes later and Messi got his second goal in the 68th. Neymar entered in the 62nd in his first appearance since an ankle injury on Jan. 12 and scored in the 89th.

Barcelona (19-2-3) leads the league on goal difference over Atletico Madrid (19-2-3), which ended a three-game losing streak with a 3-0 home win over Valladolid. Raul Garcia scored and set up Diego Costa's 21st league goal of the season. Real Madrid (18-2-3) plays at Getafe on Sunday.

A smoke bomb with effects similar to tear gas was thrown onto the field of El Madrigal Stadium and forced the game between host Villarreal and Celta Vigo to be temporarily stopped in the 87th minute. Fans streamed to exits and players asked for water as it apparently irritated eyesight. A public announcer asked the spectators to evacuate. The game was restarted after around a 20-minute wait for the smoke to clear, and Celta scored its second goal in a 2-0 win.

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Manchester City beat Chelsea 2-0 Saturday on goals by Stevan Jovetic and Samir Nasri to reach the FA Cup quarterfinals and keep alive its chance to win four titles this season.

Jovetic scored in the 16th minute and Nasri in the 67th as he returned from a left knee injury sustained Jan. 12.

Sunderland also advanced, beating Southampton 1-0 on Craig Gardner's 39th-minute goal as the Black Cats rested American forward Jozy Altidore and many regulars.

Defending champion Wigan won 2-1 at Cardiff. Ben Watson, whose goal won the cup before the team was relegated from the Premier League last May, scored the decisive goal at south Wales.

BERLIN (AP) — Bayern Munich (19-0-2) opened a 16-point Bundesliga lead with a 4-0 win over Freiburg that extended its record league unbeaten streak to 46 games.

Dante scored on a header in the 19th minute, Xherdan Shaqiri added goals on deflected shots in the 34th and 42nd and Claudio Pizarro got the final goal in the 88th.

Second-place Bayer Leverkusen (14-6-1) lost 2-1 to Schalke. Hamburg lost 4-2 at last-place Eintracht Braunschweig, extending its losing streak to seven league games and eight overall. Coach Bert van Marwijk was fired after the match.

Hoffenheim defeated Stuttgart as American Fabian Johnson played for the first time since breaking his right hand on Jan. 25. Johnson went the entire match at right back.

American forward Aron Johannsson returned from a groin injury sustained Feb. 4 and scored his 22nd goal of the season in AZ Alkmaar's 1-1 tie against visiting Utrecht in the Dutch Eredivisie.

The 23-year-old scored a go-ahead goal in the 21st minute, his 14th league goal this season.

American forward Juan Agudelo started for Utrecht and was substituted in the 74th minute.

MILAN, Italy (AP) — Rodrigo Palacio scored in the 34th minute and Mauro Icardi in the 65th, giving Inter Milan a 2-1 win at Fiorentina in Serie A.

Juan Cuadrado scored in the 46th on a long-range shot that was misjudged by goalkeeper Samir Handanovic. Mario Gomez entered in the 68th for Fiorentina, his first game since injuring his left knee against Cagliari on Sept. 15.

Inter (10-5-9) is fifth with 39 points, five behind Fiorentina (13-6-5), which is three points back of Napoli for Italy's final Champions League berth

PARIS (AP) — James Rodriguez showed Monaco can cope without injured forward Radamel Falcao, scoring in the 45th and 76th minutes of a 2-0 victory at Bastia,

Falcao is sidelined following surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament, and new Monaco signing Dimitar Berbatov missed the match because of a minor knee injury.

Second-place Monaco (15-2-8) is five points behind Paris Saint-Germain (17-1-7).
