Message to ATV drivers – Stay out of construction zones

GARDEN CITY, Kan. (KSNW) — Some people have been driving all-terrain vehicles where they shouldn’t in Kansas. Now, the Kansas Department of Transportation is getting law enforcement involved.

KDOT says some people have been driving ATVs in construction work zones, raising safety concerns for the construction workers and the ATV drivers and riders. There have also been reports of property damage.

According to KDOT, ATVs have been getting into a blocked-off area by the bridge replacement project on U.S. Highway 83B, south of Garden City. Barricades and construction fencing mark the area as a no-go zone. KDOT uses the area for equipment storage and other work-related activities.

“People driving all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) have been disregarding the work zone, which could result in damage to the state and contractor’s property,” KDOT said on social media. “KDOT urges the public to stay out of the work zone area.”

KDOT has notified the Kansas Highway Patrol and other local law enforcement agencies about the incidents.

“We urge motorists to respect all work zones, not just for their safety but for the safety of the construction workers,” KDOT said.
