A prototype of the facelifted Mercedes-Benz S-Class, which is due next year as a 2018 model, has been spotted testing. More luxurious and more tech, at least this is what we can expect from the upcoming top-of-the-line Mercedes sedan.

From the shots, it’s clear that the upcoming S-Class won’t get a new evolutionary design, but minor cosmetic changes. Up front, there will be reworked headlamps that have a different shape from the existing model and feature differently shaped DRLs. These will be a part of Mercedes’ next-generation Multibeam LED matrix headlight technology. The front bumper is also modified and looks a little smaller. The fascia gets these minor changes, while out back we can’t see any modifications.

We can expect Mercedes to update the current powertrain to deliver more power with improved fuel economy. Also, the seven-speed automatic gearbox will be replaced by the new nine-speed transmission. Reports also suggest that the more powerful version might get the AMG brand’s new 4.0-litre unit in place of the current 5.5-litre V8 mill.

This is a mid-life refresh of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and not a next-generation model. We can expect it to go into production early next year followed by a global launch. The Indian market will also get this facelifted model then, replacing the current sedan.
