The Goodwood Festival of Speed in England started on Saturday with the Mercedes-Benz Classic showing off their collection of historic cars. However, the show-stopper was the Mercedes-AMG GT-R that joined the Hillclimb line-up following its world premiere at Mercedes-Benz World. The venue was a perfect backdrop for the public debut of the glowworm-green 577bhp monster. Check out the pictures.
The Mercedes-AMG GT-R is the highly anticipated track-focused variant of the carmaker’s performance flagship - the Mercedes-AMG GT.
The exterior paintwork dubbed as the ‘AMG Green Hell Magno’ is a striking matte paintjob. It pays homage to the Nürburgring track.
Apart from the exterior paint, the bodywork now features new carbonfibre arches. These are 46mm and 57mm wider at the front and back respectively.
Then the new grille with 15 vertical chrome fins refers to the historic Panamericana road race. It mimics the 300 SL that won the famous Mexican race in 1952.
While the front deck is made of lightweight magnesium, the boot still remains in steel. This is mainly to handle the pressure exerted by the manually adjustable huge rear wing.
The car rides on lightweight ten-spoke forged wheels shod with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres as standard. The front gets 275/35 ZR 19 sized tyres and the rear, 325/30 ZR 20.
The Mercedes-AMG GT-R has a 4.0-litre V8 mill that churns out 585bhp of power. It makes it capable of reaching 62mph from standstill in just 3.6 seconds and on to 198mph.
The biggest highlight is the rear wheel steering on the AMG GT-R, a first for Mercedes. So four-wheel steer, immense power output and lightweight materials make the car a track weapon.
