Mercedes-AMG Confirms It's Building an F1-Engined Hybrid Hypercar
We've heard rumors about it for a while, but it's finally confirmed. Mercedes-AMG is developing a hypercar based around the same hybrid powertrains that power its F1 cars. A Mercedes executive announced it at the AMG GT C Roadster's launch event at the Paris Auto Show.
AMG didn't reveal any details, but a sketch teased a road car that looks a lot like a prototype racer, complete with a roof-scoop and an aerodynamic fin. Previous rumors said that the car will center around a carbon fiber monocoque and use gullwing doors, just like the Mercedes-Benz 300SL of the 1950s.
A power-to-weight ratio of one-to-one has reportedly been targeted by AMG, but the company aims to build something more civilized than Aston Martin's recently-announced AM-RB 001. To that end, it's likely that AMG will increase the size of its V6 F1 engine for road use. We've also heard that Lotus Engineering is involved in the project in some capacity, but that might not ever be confirmed.
Next year is AMG's 50th birthday and given its success on- and off-track, a hypercar is the perfect way to celebrate. Things just got very interesting for the Aston Martin AM-RB 001, developed in partnership with Red Bull's F1 team.
