A's use Mengden, 3 relievers to shut out Cards

Daniel Mengden and three relievers combined for a five-hit shutout and the visiting Oakland Athletics completed a two-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals with a 2-0 win on Wednesday night.

Beau Taylor and Matt Chapman homered for the A's, who have won seven of nine.

The Cardinals have lost three straight.

Mengden (2-1) turned in an ace-like performance filling the rotation spot of Frankie Montas, who was suspended last week for 80 games for a PED violation. The 26-year-old Mengden, beginning his second stint with Oakland this season, allowed four hits and a walk while striking out five over six innings.

After contributing 5 2/3 scoreless innings Tuesday night, the A's bullpen tossed three more Wednesday, with Liam Hendriks pitching around a Marcell Ozuna double in the ninth inning for his second save.

Mark Canha had two hits for Oakland.

St. Louis starter Adam Wainwright (5-7) allowed two runs on seven hits over 6 2/3 innings in his second start since returning from a brief stint on the injured list.

He struck out nine and walked one in just his second home loss of the season.

Tommy Edman had two hits for St. Louis.

Taylor broke a scoreless tie with two outs in the fourth when he connected with an 0-2 sinker for his second home run of the season.

The first two A's reached base against Wainwright in the sixth, but the veteran got a fly out and two strikeouts to end the threat.

The Cardinals had two on against Mengden after Ozuna walked with two outs, but Jose Martinez grounded out.

Chapman (2-for-4) made it 2-0 when he clubbed his 19th homer of the season with two outs in the seventh.
