Victim identified in Orange Mound block party shooting

Several students are hurting this morning, including Mrs. Gibson’s daughter who is in the 11th grade at Overton High School.

“Some of them have never lost their peers and some of them are getting tired of it– it’s just sad,” said Gibson. She told WREG that her daughter knew some of the victims. “She is sad and I told her we are not strangers to counselors at all.”

Ms. Gibson stated she found out about the block party when her daughter asked if she could go. “It was just a no, and I am glad it was a no,” she said.

Memphis Police tell us it started Saturday evening at Orange Mound Park. Police say there were more than 300 people at the block party including youth.

“It’s hard as a parent to decide where to let your child go or what activities to let them participate in because the last thing you want to do is get that phone call,” said Gibson.

Gibson believes it is time to create safe spaces where youth can get together and be teenagers. She wants to remind those in the community no one wins after gun violence.

“It’s prom season. They are about to get ready to graduate and to deal with a loss this big during this time. It’s about to be summer. It’s just like never-ending violence,” Gibson said. “We have to teach our kids better.”

Althea Greene, Chair of the Memphis-Shelby County Schools Board of Education released a statement on Monday regarding the incident.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic mass shooting that happened in Orange Mound this past weekend. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who are deeply impacted by this tragedy. We echo the sentiments of our city and county leaders that we all must do our part to stop these senseless acts of violence and protect our young people and the future of this city.
