Significant road closures in Uptown for Friday’s memorial services

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Funeral services are set to take place on Friday for the fallen Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officer killed earlier this week in a shootout between a suspect and law enforcement at a home in east Charlotte.

Officer Joshua Eyer, a 31 native of New Jersey, was one of four law enforcement officers killed by a suspect who was being served a warrant by a US Marshals Task Force Unit.

Services are being held at First Baptist Church on South Davidson Street in Uptown’s Second Ward and begin at 10 a.m. Friday. Several dignitaries are expected to be in attendance including North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper.

Significant road closures are expected around CMPD’s Uptown headquarters as well as First Baptist Church on South Davidson Street in Second Ward. Drivers and commuters are being advised to avoid the areas.

Eyer was recently awarded CMPD Officer of the Month. He leaves behind his wife Ashley and 2-year-old son Andrew.

There was a stark contrast in tones around the city Friday. While music lovers descended upon the Queen City for Day 1 of the inaugural Lovin’ Life Music Fest in Uptown’s First Ward, a much more somber tone could be felt across Charlotte.

“He’s going to be sorely missed in this community,” an emotional Chief Johnny Jennings said earlier this week. “He was the kind of officer you want on your team. He’s the kind of officer you want to respond when you need help.”

Eyer’s wife and Jennings are expected to speak during the memorial services and there will be appearances from the NC Army National Guard and CMPD Honor Guard.

Officer Eyer joined CMPD in 2017.
